What is a water mist fire extinguisher?

A water mist fire extinguisher is multi-purpose fire appliance that can be used safely on a variety of fires, including class A, B, C, E and F. Water mist fire extinguishers have been approved by LPCB, the Loss Prevention Certification Board and BSI, the British Standards Institution – third party certifications from independent laboratories who can verify that water mist fire extinguisher is safe to use and free from legionella. Legionella is a disease caused by bacteria found in water and so, it’s important to guarantee quality with your fire fighting equipment.

Benefits of a water mist fire extinguisher:

  • Can be used on a variety of fires
  • Legionella-free
  • 3L – 6L to suit marine requirements
  • Makes training easier
  • Reduce downtime thanks to less damage from water mist
  • Clears smoke
  • Service costs are reduced
  • Uses deionized water with no additives
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Safer and cleaner to use
  • Cost-effective over their life cycle

What is the “E-Series Water Mist”?

The E-Series Water Mist Fire Extinguisher provides ‘all-in-one’ technology, able to tackle a multitude of fires – meaning that households or professional catering kitchens needn’t have two types of fire extinguishers but just the one. In the event of a fire, using a multipurpose device will allow the building’s fire marshal’s to make quicker, life-saving decisions.

This revolutionary range has been made by Jewel Fire Group. This device stores deionised water (water that has had nearly all ions separated including chloride, iron, copper, calcium and sodium) in a canister and produces a fine spray that expels from the extinguisher’s jet, once the trigger has been compressed.

This type of extinguisher will benefit offices, warehouses, factories and all other buildings alike because the simplicity reduces the cost of training all staff and risk of using the wrong type of fire extinguisher.

The dangers of using the wrong fire extinguisher include:

  • Water Fire Extinguishers – using this on an electrical fire puts the user at risk of an electric shock. These are not to be used on burning fat or electrical fires.
  • Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers – designed to tackle cooking oil fires (class F fires) and are not to be used on wood fires.
  • AFFF Foam Fire Extinguishers – has a strong chemical composition that can fight a number of fires including electrical fires. Due to the sheer amount of chemicals in this foam, it is extremely dangerous in particular environments such as chip or fat pan fryers.
  • CO2 Fire Extinguishers – fire thrive off three things, heat, oxygen and fuel. CO2 extinguishers work to starve the oxygen, which puts out the fire, however, it will also make it hard for you to breathe when there’s limited oxygen. The source of the fire must be expelled because if not, the fire could reignite once the carbon dioxide has dispelled. CO2 should never be used with cooking oil or fat fires.
  • Dry Powder Fire Extinguisherslike CO2 extinguishers, dry powder needs to be completely extinguished otherwise it’s likely to return. The dry power does not cool a fire well and this substance must not be inhaled as it can be detrimental to your health and can cause problems with your vision. Dry powder will ruin soft furnishings and electrical hardware and is not recommended in enclosed spaces. This type of extinguisher is not to be used on fat or oil fires.

Why use water mist fire extinguishers?

The mist that is expelled from the extinguisher cools the source of the fire (i.e. the burning item). Once the fine mist has left the jet of the extinguisher the mist evaporates, creating steam, which reduces the oxygen supply. The water droplets are so fine that they do not descend below the burning hot liquids and prevent an explosion, like a ordinary water extinguisher would. Water mist extinguishers can be used on wood fires, petrol fires, gas fires, electrical fires and cooking oil fires, which is why they’re such impressive tools.
