Fire Door Testing & Inspections
Fire doors are an absolutely critical part of a building’s fire safety plan and standards.
In the event of a fire, these doors play a pivotal role in the protection of everyone on site, your building, and all your stock or equipment that’s inside.
However, fire doors can only perform correctly if they are properly maintained and regularly inspected.
At Target Fire Protection, we offer comprehensive, end to end fire safety services, including thorough fire door testing and inspection.
We are trusted by commercial clients throughout Manchester, Rochdale and the surrounding areas, and organisations across all sectors and site types.
With our highly trained, fully experienced specialists, you can ensure that your fire doors are fully compliant and completely dependable.
Legal requirements and compliance
Not only are fire door inspections best practice for a business, but they are a legal requirement.
In the UK, fire safety legislation – including the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 – denotes that the ‘responsible person’ of a site (e.g. the building owner or facilities manager) is legally responsible for ensuring that fire doors are well maintained and in suitable working order.
This legal requirement applies to a wide variety of site types, including:
- Commercial buildings
- Residential flats
- Industrial buildings
- Public buildings (e.g. schools and hospitals)
- Offices
In the UK, it is a requirement for fire doors to be routinely checked and formally inspected at least once a year. Then, in higher traffic environments, it is recommended to increase the frequency of these inspections.
In certain building types – such as multi-occupied residential properties – more frequent inspections may be required, particularly for fire doors located in communal areas or flat entrance doors (for example).
Insufficient maintenance of your fire doors can significantly increase the risk of a fire spreading throughout the entire premises, and also lead to a fire spreading more rapidly.
If you fail to comply with these legal regulations, it can also result in enforcement action, fines and even prosecution.
What is covered during a fire door inspection?
This is why fire door inspections are so essential. These inspections ensure your fire door is working exactly as it should, protecting your staff and the public, minimising the risk of unnecessary property damage, and ensuring you are remaining compliant with all legal requirements.
A professional fire door inspection involves a detailed assessment of the door set and all its components, to confirm that it will perform correctly in the event of a fire.
At Target Fire Protection, our fire door inspections include:
- Thoroughly checking for any signs of damage (and if present, recommending the right course of action to take).
- Confirming that the door closes fully and latches securely
- Checking the condition of the door leaf
- Assessing gaps and clearances around the fire door
- Inspecting seals and intumescent strips (for any signs of damage or wear)
- Testing hinges and closers
- Checking all hardware to ensure they are operating correctly
- Identifying any unauthorised modifications
- Creating documentation of every inspection and producing a detailed report, outlining the condition of every door and all its constituent parts
Without these checks, should a fire occur, your fire door may fail to contain fire and smoke.
If this occurs, the fire and smoke can spread quickly throughout the building, posing an extremely serious risk.
In reality though, almost all of the issues that are identified during a typical fire door inspection can be resolved quickly and easily, at minimal cost to the site owner. Then, they can be addressed precisely and permanently, before they are allowed to develop into a bigger problem.
