Regulation Update: Ban on PFOA in Class B Foam Fire Extinguishers
From 4th July 2025, PFOA containing foams will be banned from being used in foam fire extinguishers and systems. Foam fire extinguishers need to meet the UK Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation.
If you have an old foam fire extinguisher, or have a system that uses PFOA foam, you will need to get this refitted and updated before the deadline. If you are unsure if you need to dispose of your extinguisher, give us a call.

What can Fluorine Free Foam Fire Extinguishers be used for?
Fluorine Free Foam Fire Extinguishers are a more sustainable alternative to conventional foam fire extinguishers. This is because many firefighting foams contain fluorinated compounds, such as PFAS. Although they are effective at fighting fires, numerous studies have found that PFAS can be harmful to both humans and animals. Furthermore, PFAS do not naturally degrade, meaning they may remain in the atmosphere for many years to come.
Instead, Fluorine Free Foam Fire Extinguishers have been devised as a more eco-friendly alternative, which can be used for the same purpose as conventional foam extinguishers. These PFA-Free Fire Extinguishers work by completely covering the fire in foam, and thereby preventing the fire from spreading.

The Latest Regulation Update: Ban on PFOA in Class B Foam Fire Extinguishers
From the 4th July 2025, PFOA containing foams will be banned in the UK. This means that they cannot be used in Class B Foam Fire Extinguishers or systems from this point onwards. This upcoming legislation will also require foam fire extinguishers to be compliant with the UK Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulations.
So, if you have old foam fire extinguishers or systems that use PFOA foam on your site, then you will need to arrange a replacement before the ban comes into effect.
