Completing Your Fire Extinguisher Checks
This should go without saying, but fire extinguishers are absolutely essential to any fire safety plan. They are always the first line of defence when it comes to putting out or containing smaller fires which could develop into something more destructive, so we should make certain they are properly maintained. In this article, we will be taking a look at the different fire extinguisher checks you should be carrying out to keep your equipment fully functional.
Why do my fire extinguishers require regular maintenance?
Of course, as we’ve already stated, fire extinguishers save lives, but this isn’t the only reason why you need to make sure your extinguishers are properly maintained and your fire extinguisher checks completed. Annual fire extinguisher maintenance is a legal requirement, and failing to adhere to this could result in a hefty fine.
At Target Fire, we have our own software which records all of your site information. From here, we know actually when your extinguishers require servicing and can schedule it in for you, so you never miss a service!
Fire Extinguisher Monthly Inspections
While annual maintenance is a legal requirement, monthly fire extinguisher checks ensure that your extinguishers remain operational between services.
Here’s a list of the monthly inspections that you should be carrying out:
- Check for a damaged hose or nozzle
- Check for broken or missing lock pins
- Check the handle is secure
- Look for service labels – they should always be attached and legible
- Ensure extinguishers are visible. In the event of a fire, they need to be accessed easily
- Check the pressure dial on the extinguisher and make sure it’s pointing to the green
- Check for any other signs of damage, including corrosion or leakage
Fire Extinguisher Annual Inspections
To ensure that your extinguishers function properly when required, and to comply with legislation, a proper service should be carried out once a year by a qualified engineer.
In accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and BS5306 guidelines, the service will include full fire extinguisher checks including; maintenance, examination and, if required, a full repair.
However, a service won’t necessarily just cover the equipment itself, it will also check:
- If the extinguishers are in the right place and fitted correctly
- If the locations of the extinguishers are suitable, considering the hazards in the area
How long does a fire extinguisher last?
Assuming that the extinguisher doesn’t sustain bad damage, UK fire regulations SB5306 Part 3 suggest it should be given an extended service (previously known as Discharge Test and Recharge) every 5 years or 20% of your extinguishers tested every year to spread the service work and cost. C02 extinguishers, on the other hand, will require a pressure test every 10 years. You can test and refill extinguishers so they are maintained correctly and can last for 20 years. The more we refill and reuse extinguishers the less waste is created, which helps environmentally.
